Kelp Farming: Maine’s New Cash Crop

seagriculture.eu

Kelp farming is taking the Maine coast by storm. The very first kelp farm in America was planted in Castro Bay, Maine by Tollef Olson about 15 years ago. Today there are over a hundred kelp farms in Maine alone.

Seaweed’s rich nutritional content and low environmental footprint make its commercial cultivation a promising new venture for growers and entrepreneurs. Like the speed of development of the kelp industry itself, the macroalgae is also one of the fastest growing plants on Earth.

In this video Bloomberg’s Janet Wu visits an ocean farm in Maine that is growing kelp to make veggie burgers.
