Algae Biomass Summit Calls for Abstracts
At the virtual 2021 Algae Biomass Summit a global audience will share milestones in microalgae and macroalgae research, commercial progress, new products and other breakthroughs. Submit abstracts for speaking and poster presentations by March 31, 2021 to receive preferential scoring by the review committee.

Provectus Algae Appoints CEO of Senti Biosciences to Board
Provectus Algae (Provectus), an Australian biotechnology company specializing in the optimization of algae to produce high-value compounds for use in a wide array of industries and applications, has appointed Tim Lu, M.D., Ph.D., to its board of directors. Dr. Lu is co-founder and CEO of the
therapeutics and synthetic biology company Senti Biosciences. The board appointment comes at a strategic time for Provectus. Following a successful seed funding round last year, the company is focused on advancing the development of its high-throughput experimentation platform and standardizing synthetic biology toolsets to enable rapid product development capabilities.
AlgaEnergy to Become B Corporation
AlgaEnergy, the Spain-based global leader in microalgae biotechnology with business units in Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Asia-Pacific, is the first microalgae-biotechnology company in the world to become a B Corporation (B Corp). AlgaEnergy joins a community of over 3,800 businesses globally that are B Corps. The distinction is awarded to companies that meet a rigorous set of social and environmental standards that represent a commitment to goals outside of shareholder profit.
David Macnair Joins MiAlgae Board
Biotech firm MiAlgae, which uses a whisky co-product to create algal oil for aquafeed and pet food, has appointed global food and pet care specialist David Macnair to its board. The Edinburgh-based business creates eco-friendly, nutrient rich animal and fish feed by repurposing “waste” co-products from the whisky distillation process. Mr. Macnair was formerly Global VP R&D, with Mars Global Petcare prior to retirement in 2015, and he continues in his role as Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Monell Chemical Senses Centre.
First algae aquaculture lease granted off Australia’s Yorke Peninsula
Acommercial seaweed farm off of Australia’s Yorke Peninsula is a step closer with the Marshall Liberal Government granting project approval. The Narungga Nation Aboriginal Corporation has been granted two production leases and licenses for 10 hectares within the eastern Point Pearce intertidal aquaculture zone, and 30 hectares within the west zone.
Early estimates by CH4 Global indicate seaweed production could be worth $140 million a year in South Australia with the potential to create 1,200 jobs.
Indian startup Zaara Biotech gets $10M investment from UAE’s TCN International
Biotechnology startup Zaara Biotech has landed an investment of $10 million from UAE-based TCN International Commerce LLC. Zaara, which focuses on research in energy and food crisis using micro-algae, has received the funding for its project Algae Seaweed Technology under the brand B-lite Cookies. Najeeb Bin Haneef, founder-CEO of Zaara, and Dr. Mohamed Shafi Abdulla, chairman and managing director at TCN, signed a memorandum of understanding in Sharjah on Saturday.
